Complete joint care
Your joints make easy, pain-free movement possible, but when they become diseased or injured, they can cause serious pain. Our orthopedic specialists in our health system offer expert treatment for all types of joint conditions.
The term arthritis translates to "inflammation of the joint," but it’s used to refer to multiple rheumatic diseases — disorders affecting the muscles, tendons, ligaments or joints.
Arthritis occurs in various forms, including bacterial arthritis, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It may result from infection, trauma, degenerative changes, metabolic disturbances or other causes.
Our experienced rheumatology specialists work with you to evaluate your condition and develop a customized treatment plan using the most advanced approaches to relieve your pain and restore your quality of life.
Depending on your diagnosis, treatment options for arthritis and rheumatic diseases may include:
- Dietary changes
- Heat and cold therapies
- Information about special devices that help open jars, close zippers, hold pencils and assist in other everyday tasks
- Joint care instruction
- Mobilization therapy
- Pain relievers and other medications
- Rest and relaxation
- Splints or braces
- Surgery to restore function or relieve pain
- Water therapy
- Weight reduction
Joint replacement surgery
Often, joint pain can become severe enough to warrant joint replacement surgery. Joint replacement offers advanced solutions to joint pain, either through total or partial replacement of a joint. By removing the diseased or damaged joint and replacing it with an artificial one, patients can regain pain-free movement.
We offer the following joint replacement procedures:
We were the first provider in Southwest Virginia to use new technology that offers guided personalized surgery for shoulder replacements. A software tool allows surgeons to understand their patient's unique anatomy before surgery and personalize the surgical plan using simulated bone and implants, preserving as much bone as possible and giving the patient better outcomes.
A key part of our orthopedic program is physical therapy and rehabilitation, offered on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Our therapists develop treatment plans tailored to each patient's specific needs, helping him or her maximize their independence and mobility and improving quality of life.
Own the Bone® program
LewisGale Medical Center participates in a national quality improvement program called Own the Bone®. This program ensures our patients with fragility fractures are screened and appropriately treated for low bone density or osteoporosis, helping to reduce the risk for future fractures.
