About us

For more than a century, LewisGale Medical Center has delivered the highest quality healthcare to residents of Southwest Virginia. We provide the full scope of healthcare services you expect to find at a regional referral center.

Our history

LewisGale Medical Center has been delivering exceptional healthcare services to the Roanoke, Virginia region for over a century.

A strong start

Just after the turn of the 20th century, Dr. Joseph N. Lewis and Dr. Sparrell S. Gale opened a modern, technologically advanced hospital in Roanoke, Virginia, complete with running water and central heating — an incredible feat for its launch in 1909.

Through the years, we’ve continued the Lewis and Gale tradition of partnering with exceptional medical professionals and employing the latest medical technology to deliver unsurpassed levels of patient care and optimum results.

Forming new partnerships

In 1972, Hospital Corporation of America (HCA) purchased Lewis and Gale’s hospital and built a 37-bed facility. In the following years, LewisGale Medical Center grew rapidly. With the 1996 addition of the Roanoke Valley Psychiatric Center — now known as LewisGale Behavioral Health Services — our facility is currently licensed for over 500 beds and serves as a regional referral center for comprehensive medical services.

When HCA acquired the former LewisGale Clinic located next to the hospital, a new organization — LewisGale Physicians — was formed. Today, our medical center, LewisGale Physicians and hundreds of independent physicians work together to provide the quality healthcare our communities expect and deserve.

Delivering compassionate care

As one of the largest medical centers in Virginia, our hospital offers a broad spectrum of healthcare services to meet the ever-changing needs of our patients, their families and all residents of the region.

In addition to our variety of specialty services, HCA Virginia Health System has long been best known for compassion, dedication and friendliness. We’re committed to excellence and believe that top-quality healthcare is best delivered through team effort in a safe, professional and service-oriented environment.
