Robot-assisted surgery in the Roanoke Valley

Robot-assisted surgery allows our surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures with great precision, offering patients a range of potential benefits, including faster recoveries and minimal scarring. We are proud to provide robotic surgery at LewisGale Medical Center as part of our commitment to serving patients in Salem and the surrounding communities with the most advanced technology. Patients can trust that our specialists undergo extensive training in the specific robotic surgical systems they use for surgery.

Expertise in robotic technology

As a member of HCA Virginia's Institute of Robotic Surgery, we are part of an entity that has performed more robotic surgeries than any other health system in the state. In fact, we were the first hospital in the region to have more than 2,000 robotic surgeries completed by a single surgeon.

Our surgeons have undergone specialized and intensive training to use the specific robot required for your procedure. Our highly experienced team of anesthesiologists, nurses and surgical techs have also been trained to support each surgeon's needs.

How robotic surgery works

Tiny incisions, much smaller than those of traditional surgery, are used to introduce miniature instruments and a high-definition 3D camera. Your surgeon views the magnified image of the surgical site while maneuvering the robotic equipment, which translates the surgeon's hand movements into precise micro-movements to operate.

The robot never makes a move on its own — the surgeon is always 100 percent in control.

Robotic surgeries we perform

Unlike traditional surgery, robotic surgery allows surgeons to make tiny incisions and use smaller instruments to perform a wide variety of procedures. As a result, patients experience less pain, reduced blood and fewer complications and recover more quickly compared to traditional surgery.

Our surgeons perform a wide array of procedures using robotic surgery, including:

It's important to follow the specific instructions given to you by your surgery team. If you have additional questions about your procedure, don't hesitate to reach out to our surgery department.

Visitor information

In our waiting room, we have a computerized tracker board so friends and family can keep track of the patient's progress during surgery.

Robotic surgery at HCA Virginia hospitals

Robotic-assisted surgery allows for small incisions and more control, creating access to detailed visuals while controlling robotic arms during procedures. This allows for minimally invasive procedures, offering fewer complications and a faster recovery.
