Hospice vs. palliative care

Hospice care is provided to assist patients and their families in instances in which end-of-life is expected for a patient. This may result after an injury, disease or natural conditions, such as age. Conversely, palliative care may be provided at any time during the course of a condition or treatment.

Both types of care are provided by highly compassionate teams of doctors and nurses. They work closely together and focus on patient comfort, including wound care and pain management.

In-hospital hospice care

Because hospice care is typically end-of-life care, it is most often provided in the patient's home. However, there are times when this is not an option because 24-hour continuous medical care is necessary. In those cases, HCA Virginia's facilities provide an intensive level of care and a supportive environment for your family.

Our inpatient hospice care services

We've made our hospice care centers comfortable and home-like. We have also equipped these facilities with advanced technology. This combination ensures we are able to provide high-quality inpatient hospice care to each of our patients and their families.

Our inpatient hospice care units help patients who need:

  • Frequent adjustments to medications to help manage symptoms
  • Management of persistent symptoms (physical and/or behavioral) because they cannot be managed easily in another setting
  • To transition from a hospital to receive a higher-level of medical assistance
