From routine screenings to other pertinent imaging, diagnostic and surgical services, our team of breast specialists works tirelessly to deliver high quality care, whether you're not predisposed to getting breast cancer or if you require high-risk screening and management.

The diverse suite of breast care services available at LewisGale Hospital Pulaski includes:

  • 3D mammography — 3D mammograms are imaging tests that combine multiple breast X-rays to create a three-dimensional image. Typically used for patients with no breast cancer symptoms, 3D mammograms are preferred to traditional mammograms due to their ability to detect more cancers. They can also be used to investigate conditions such as breast pain and masses.
  • Breast ultrasound — This diagnostic exam uses soundwaves to produce pictures of the breast's internal structures. Its principal use is to help diagnose lumps or other abnormalities found during a breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), mammogram or physical examination. It also helps physicians see certain types of breast lesions and abnormalities that remain unclear on a mammogram.
  • Cyst aspiration — This procedure involves draining fluid from a breast cyst with a needle. The procedure can be illuminating in the early detection of cancer if the cyst turns out to be unbenign. Aspirating the fluid can also alleviate symptoms and discomfort.
  • Stereotactic breast biopsy — This procedure employs mammography to locate breast abnormalities requiring removal of tissue samples for microscopic examination. Less invasive than a surgical biopsy, the breast is placed between two plates, and a sample is removed with a needle based on the location determined by the mammograms.
  • Ultrasound core needle biopsy — This type of biopsy is typically performed if breast cancer has been indicated on other tests. Using an ultrasound to locate the problem area, a radiologist provides a local anesthetic and makes a small incision. They then insert a spring-loaded needle with a suction device to remove appropriate breast tissue.
  • Breast cancer surgery — Breast cancer treatments can sometimes involve surgery to completely remove cancerous tissue, perform post-removal breast reconstruction and/or examine the possibility of cancerous spread to the lymph nodes. Patients who require surgery for breast cancer either undergo a lumpectomy, where only the cancerous part of the breast is removed, or a mastectomy, in which the entire breast is removed.

We also offer bone density screenings to help in diagnosing osteoporosis, which involve X-rays to measure calcium and bone mineral levels. The higher the mineral content, the denser the bone, and with that, a decreased likelihood for breakage. If you have breast cancer, bone density screenings are crucial to make sure your bones stay strong during treatment and to prevent and detect cancer-related osteoporosis.
