At Dominion Hospital, we strive to keep you informed and involved in your care. We want you to know what to expect before, during and after your stay.
Admission to Dominion Hospital
Dominion Hospital is the only freestanding mental health facility in Northern Virginia. We lead the region in short-term mental health services for children ages 5 to 12 years, adolescents ages 13 to 17 years old and adults age 18 years old and older. Our professional multispecialty team knows about mental health disorders, treatment options and corresponding levels of care.
Our physicians listen to your concerns and ask about your medical and mental health history to ensure a smooth and timely admission to our hospital. Through this collaboration, our teams will meet your needs, fulfill your goals and prepare you for the day you return home.
Registration
To help your registration process flow as smoothly as possible, bring the following items and information with you:
- All active insurance cards
- A list of all medications you currently take
- Photo identification — a picture ID — such as a driver's license
- Advance directive documents, if you have them, such as a living will or durable power of attorney for healthcare decisions
- Health maintenance organization (HMO)/preferred provider organization (PPO) referral forms, if required
- Medical records or previous test results, if your physician has requested them
- Written letter of authorization from your insurance carrier, if you're covered by worker's compensation
- A check or credit card for deductibles, co-payments or deposits
Review, complete and bring these essential registration forms, available in PDF:
When you arrive for registration, you'll be asked to sign two more important forms — the Consent for Treatment and the Authorization to Bill Insurance forms. Although we can't guarantee it, we make every effort to assign an in-network physician when one is available to increase the likelihood of insurance coverage.

Online or in person, our priority is to respond to your questions and help you feel welcome, safe and comfortable. Before you enter out hospital, you can get information and tools to prepare for your stay.
Reporting progress to insurance
Most insurers require that hospitals and other healthcare providers keep them informed about patient progress and the prescribed treatment plan so insurance benefits can continue. With this approach, you're assured of care that's constantly reviewed and improved and that our staff efficiently provides the necessary communication.
Confidentiality
We are committed to keeping your information confidential through strict policies that prevent anyone from obtaining your information from us without your written permission.
Our treatment philosophy
Dominion Hospital is dedicated to meeting the behavioral health needs of our community, region and beyond by offering access to comprehensive mental health programs. Consistent with our heritage, we work with a dedicated medical and multidisciplinary staff to provide consistent high-quality behavioral health services.
Our treatment philosophy is rooted in a recovery model that provides individualized support through evidence-based practices. We believe that people can recover from mental health disorders. For some individuals, recovery is the ability to live a fulfilling and productive life despite a disability. For others, recovery implies the reduction or complete remission of symptoms.
We also believe that treatment leads to resilience. We define resilience as the personal and community qualities that enable us to rebound from adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats or other stresses — and to go on with life with a sense of confidence and hope. Our patient-centered, holistic treatment programs, along with strong social support, can help you and your loved ones gain mastery over your mental health problems.
We are grounded in the following principles:
- Empowering patients to recover
- Belief in the human capacity to change
- Dedication to evidence-based treatments
- Family and social support essential to recovery
Dedication to trauma-informed care
As behavioral health professionals, we believe and are committed to your ability to take control of your life. We offer trauma-informed care — a framework for shifting the focus of mental health programs to understanding your past and present life. This evidence-based approach is rooted in trust, transparency, safety, empowerment and collaboration and it informs all aspects of our programs.
Compassionate crisis stabilization
We offer hope, support and a full range of treatment options. We have a distinctive focus on crisis intervention and stabilization through our inpatient and partial hospitalization programs (PHP), as well as our strong outpatient referral network. Individuals receive high-quality care through specialized services in safe, healthy, confidential and calming environments.
We treat many emotional, behavioral and mental health issues, including:
- Anxiety
- Bipolar disorder
- Depression
- Drug and alcohol abuse
- Eating disorders
- Self-injury and suicidal behaviors
Comprehensive professional care
We collaborate with experienced clinicians who excel in identifying symptoms, developing comprehensive treatment plans and delivering effective clinical care. Our inpatient programs provide 24-hour nursing care with full psychiatric services, while our partial hospitalization programs offer a highly structured environment during the day for participants who can return to their homes at night.
Eating disorder treatment
Our Reflections Eating Disorders Treatment Center is a self-contained facility. We help individuals battling anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and related physical and mental health concerns. We offer several treatment options so every patient gets the individualized care they need. Treatment options can include our 24/7 inpatient care program or our partial hospitalization program, which allows patients to spend 12 hours a day in our structured environment and return to their own homes at night.
We are the first and only program in Northern Virginia to provide non-punitive interventions in both inpatient and partial hospitalization (day) programs. Patients also have access to outpatient care all in one comprehensive treatment center. Our contemporary treatment center offers the amenities to keep you comfortable while you receive treatment.
