Henrico Doctors’ Hospital has for the second year in a row been named one of the nation’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals by Premier, Inc. This makes it the only hospital in the Commonwealth to receive this honor.

“We are proud to be the region's leader in cardiac care,” said Dr. William Lunn, president of HCA Healthcare Capital Division. “This recognition is a testament to the Henrico Doctors’ Hospital team’s commitment to providing world-class care and exceptional outcomes."

HCA Virginia hospitals care for more hearts, veins and arteries than any other health system in Central Virginia. Henrico Doctors’ Hospital specializes in heart valve diagnosis and repair, as well as both traditional and minimally invasive surgery for conditions like heart arrhythmia, heart attack, heart disease, heart failure and vascular disease.

The 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals list is based on an objective, quantitative analysis of publicly available data.

Based on comparisons between the study’s top performers and a peer group of similar hospitals, this year’s analysis found that the 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals delivered better outcomes while operating more efficiently. Compared to their peers, this year’s top performers had:

  • 25 percent fewer heart attack deaths and 66 percent fewer bypass surgery deaths.
  • Higher 30-day survival rates for heart attack, heart failure and bypass patients.
  • Lower 30-day readmission rates for these conditions.
  • Shorter average hospital stays.
  • Better patient experiences, with top-performing hospitals scoring higher on patient satisfaction surveys.

These outcomes add up to meaningful differences. If all hospitals operated at the level of this year's top performers, there could be 14,000 fewer deaths from heart disease, 28,600 fewer bypass and angioplasty patients who suffer complications, and over $1.5 billion in inpatient savings annually.

“Heart disease is America’s leading cause of death, affecting roughly 127.9 million Americans and costing about $252 billion,” said David Zito, Premier’s President, Performance Services. “As hospitals and health systems strive for continuous improvement in cardiovascular care, data-driven insights and transformational strategies are vital for ensuring patient-centric care aligned with optimized financial and operational performance. Premier’s 50 Top Cardiovascular Hospitals program helps hospitals evaluate national cardiovascular disease trends and develop strategies to deliver targeted, evidence-based care.”
