Several HCA Virginia hospitals have received multiple 2025 Specialty Excellence awards from Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. The awards recognize hospitals with superior clinical performance in 16 specialties including heart surgery, critical care and stroke care, among others.
The distinction places Chippenham Hospital, Johnston-Willis Hospital, Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, Parham Doctors’ Hospital, Retreat Doctors’ Hospital, LewisGale Medical Center, Reston Hospital Center and Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center in the top 10 percent of all U.S. hospitals specializing in these areas.
In Virginia, HCA Healthcare hospitals led the rankings for surgical care excellence, with Reston Hospital Center earning the No. 1 spot for delivering superior patient outcomes in surgical care and orthopedic surgery in the commonwealth. Henrico Doctors’ Hospital also earned the top spot in Virginia for gastrointestinal surgery.
Earlier this year, Healthgrades named HCA Virginia’s Chippenham and Johnston-Willis hospitals to its annual list of America's 100 Best Hospitals.
The 2025 Specialty Excellence recognitions reflect HCA Virginia’s commitment to providing the best care possible and distinguish the hospitals as leading the commonwealth in specialty care. Healthgrades evaluated outcomes at more than 4,500 hospitals across 31 common procedures and conditions for these awards.
“We strive for excellent patient outcomes and the highest standards of patient care,” said Elizabeth Mikula, HCA Healthcare Capital Division vice president of quality. “These awards reflect our commitment to doing what is best for our patients. We are proud of our care teams who demonstrate every day what it means to raise the bar for specialty care throughout Virginia.”

To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance specific to specialty areas, Healthgrades communicates performance through ratings and awards. To measure performance, Healthgrades used Medicare inpatient data from the Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) file from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for years 2021 through 2023.
Patient outcomes data for 31 conditions or procedures were analyzed for virtually every hospital in the country.
