Hospital history
LewisGale Hospital Pulaski has a rich history in the New River Valley. We first opened our doors in 1915 as Pulaski Community Hospital, a small seven-bed cottage hospital in the original General Chemical Company. This iteration was managed under the charter of The Pulaski Hospital Association.
To enable more growth, Pulaski Hospital, Inc. was founded in 1926 by Dr. D.S. Divers, Dr. R.F. Thornhill, Dr. R.H. Woolling and Dr. H.R. Farley. This collective was able to forge the construction of a new hospital building on Randolph Avenue, replacing the original hospital with a physician-owned, 15-bed facility.
In September of 1948, Pulaski Hospital opened its School of Nursing, offering a three-year diploma program approved by the Virginia State Board of Nursing Examiners. The school stayed in operation until the late 1950s.
By 1965, we became Pulaski General Hospital, and began adding to our developing facilities, including new storage areas, a nursing unit, physician offices and a morgue.
Following decades of significant growth, a new $3 million hospital was built on 23 acres of land inside the city limits near Route 11. At a gauze-cutting ceremony on July 29, 1973, Pulaski Community Hospital officially opened its doors.
Renamed LewisGale Hospital Pulaski in 2010, the facility employed approximately 250 clinicians and staff. With integration into the LewisGale Regional Health System, and later into HCA Virginia Health System, our hospital now includes more than 400 employees, new medical equipment and technological advances that have greatly expanded patient care services.
Our hospital is also home to the Sarah Cannon Institute of the New River Valley. This leading-edge cancer center is the first medical facility in the region to provide HDR Brachytherapy, a radiation therapy alternative for treating breast and prostate cancers quicker and more conveniently.
Further, we also specialize in orthopedic services, oncology care, and cardiology care, providing lifesaving cardiovascular care when you need it most.
When it comes to oncology, we have received accreditation from the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) Commission on Cancer (CoC). While we have received many awards and accolades for our services, your ultimate outcome and satisfaction is our greatest honor. Your triumph can be a source of inspiration and strength for those facing similar circumstances, and we are pleased to share your stories.
