Alexis Watson, a nurse extern at HCA Virginia Johnston-Willis Hospital, is the first nursing scholarship recipient across HCA Healthcare! She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.

Watson has a passion for nursing and comes from a family of caring. When interviewed by the nursing scholarship committee, it was evident that Alexis was called into the nursing profession. She described how being an empathetic nurse includes listening and having a compassionate touch and stated: "Empathetic care comes from the heart, it’s an organic personality trait for me. Treating my patients as if they were my own family has helped me develop connections with them. Our families are people we hold near and dear to us, we love them, and protect them.”

Alexis was presented with a $14,000 scholarship by Erin Keister, HCA Healthcare Capital Division CNE, Beth Matish, Johnston-Willis CEO, members of the HCA Healthcare Capital Division, and Johnston-Willis Hospital leadership teams.

HCA Healthcare Capital Division is offering $800,000 in scholarships for students to pursue nursing careers in central and southwest Virginia, as well as New Hampshire. The funds will support the path to becoming a licensed practical/vocational nurse or a registered nurse within HCA Healthcare.
