Recognition

For our superior clinical outcomes and care, we are recognized by Healthgrades as one of America's Top 50 Facilities for vascular surgery and America's Top 100 Facilities for orthopedic, prostate and spine surgeries. We also have excellence and five-star awards for many other surgical specialties.

Comprehensive surgical services

Our surgical services include:

  • Breast surgery
  • Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgery
  • General surgery
  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Kidney transplant surgery (via Virginia Transplant Center)
  • Plastic surgery
  • Surgical oncology
  • Trauma surgery

We also specialize in:

Gastrointestinal (GI) surgery

Our hospital's gastroenterology program provides advanced surgical care for GI conditions, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In fact, we were the first facility in the Mid-Atlantic region to perform laparoscopic surgery for reflux disease as well as the first to perform robotic GI surgery in the U.S.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a type of minimally invasive procedure that allows your GI specialist to look inside your body using an instrument called an endoscope, or scope, with a fiber-optic camera attached. We offer endoscopic procedures, such as colonoscopy and bronchoscopy, as a safe and effective method to screen for diseases, obtain tissue samples and treat many GI conditions.

Heart and vascular surgery

We offer a comprehensive heart and vascular surgery program. As part of that, our cardiovascular surgeons perform a wide range of procedures, from minimally invasive heart valve surgery to interventional heart attack treatment.

We also provide a cardiovascular hybrid operating room (OR), which combines the capabilities of a traditional OR with fixed imaging equipment. This type of OR brings highly specialized cardiac equipment into one convenient suite for our surgeons.

Neurosurgery

Our neurological program provides access to expert neurosurgeons with years of experience performing neurological procedures. They offer advanced treatments for a variety of brain and nervous system conditions, such as brain tumors and movement disorders.

Spine surgery

Through our spine care program, our spine surgeons offer minimally invasive procedures, including spinal decompression and spinal fusion. We use these techniques to correct deformities, repair fractures and resolve back and spine pain.

Urologic surgery

The urologic specialists at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital’s Center for Pelvic Excellence are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of conditions of the urinary system and male reproductive system. Here, we use advanced surgical approaches to treat a variety of urologic diseases and disorders, from prostate cancer to urinary incontinence. In fact, one of the specialties of our urology program is the ability to create a sling without the use of surgical mesh for urinary incontinence treatment.

Virginia Transplant Center

Our hospital is home to the Virginia Transplant Center, where our kidney surgeons specialize in kidney transplant surgery, living kidney donations and paired kidney exchanges. Our clinical staff has years of experience helping patients through the transplant process, and we will be by your side throughout your journey to transplant, recovery and beyond.

Minimally invasive surgery

Sometimes the need to undergo surgery is unavoidable. As part of our commitment to patient-focused care, our surgeons use minimally invasive procedures whenever possible and are trained in laparoscopic, endoscopic and robot-assisted surgeries for a wide range of procedures.

Benefits of minimally invasive surgery

Minimally invasive procedures use much smaller incisions than traditional open surgery, resulting in many benefits for our patients.

Some benefits include:

  • Decreased amount of time in surgery
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Less scarring
  • Less trauma to the area surrounding the incision site
  • Quicker recovery and return to normal life
  • Shorter hospital stay

Robotic surgery

The use of robotic surgery allows us to offer our patients a wide range of minimally invasive procedures. Together with our sister facilities, Retreat Doctors' Hospital and Parham Doctors' Hospital, the surgeons in our hospitals have performed more than 10,000 robot-assisted procedures.

With a robotic surgery platform, your surgeon has an enhanced view of the surgical site and extreme precision. This makes robotic surgery an effective treatment option for delicate, hard-to-reach areas of the body, such as the pelvic area.

We use minimally invasive robotic surgery to treat conditions across numerous medical specialties, offering it for:

  • GI surgery
  • General surgery
  • Gynecologic surgery
  • Thoracic (lung) surgery
  • Urologic surgery
