Pioneering robotic surgery in northern Virginia
Because of our dedication to advanced surgical procedures, we were:
- First hospital in Virginia to offer a robot-assisted surgical guidance system for spine surgery
- First in northern Virginia to use a robotic system widely considered to be the most effective and least invasive surgical technology
- First in Virginia to use robotic technology for knee replacement surgery
Our surgical specialties
We have board-certified surgeons across numerous specialties, including:
Bariatric (weight loss) surgery
Our bariatric surgeons offer a variety of procedures to help you lose weight. Many procedures can be performed with minimally invasive techniques, decreasing your recovery time. Your surgeon will help determine your candidacy for bariatric surgery and which type may be right for you.
The gastroenterology program at our hospital provides advanced technology, new therapies and minimally invasive surgery to treat gastrointestinal (GI) conditions. When needed, our gastroenterologists collaborate with other specialists, such as gynecologic surgeons, to perform rectal prolapse repairs and other complex procedures.
Through our neurological care program, we offer minimally invasive neurosurgery techniques, including interventional neuroradiology and robot-assisted brain surgery. Our robotic platform gives our neurosurgeons an enhanced view of the surgical site, improved surgical workflow and optimal precision during these procedures.
Whether you have sustained a sports injury or need a knee replacement, we offer a comprehensive orthopedic surgery program. We also offer minimally invasive robotic surgical technology for hip and knee replacements.
With our robot-assisted surgical guidance system, our spine surgeons have enhanced planning, guidance and navigation during surgery. In fact, we are one of only a few hospitals in Virginia to offer robotic spine surgery and were the first to use this technology in the Mid-Atlantic region.
As part of our commitment to being a leader in robotic spine procedures, our hospital offers a Visiting Clinician Program. This surgical training program demonstrates best practices and innovative research methods to an exclusive group of spine surgeons from around the world. For our patients, this means the surgical techniques and expertise we use each day in our spine care program are valued by other leading physicians across the globe.
To meet all your surgical needs, we also offer surgeons who specialize in:
- Breast surgery
- General surgery
- Gynecologic and urogynecologic surgery
- Lung and thoracic (chest) surgery
- Surgical oncology
- Urological surgery
Reston Hospital Center is home to one of the Mid-Atlantic region's leading robotic surgery programs—the Institute for Robotics and Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery. Here, we have invested nearly $9 million in technology, provided privileges to 48 surgeons and performed more than 5,400 robotic surgeries.
With robot-assisted technology, our highly trained surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures for:
- Bariatric surgery
- Brain surgery
- GI surgery
- Gynecologic surgery
- Hepatobiliary surgery
- Joint replacement surgery
- Spine surgery
- Thoracic surgery
- Urologic surgery
Benefits of robotic surgery
Although each robot-assisted surgical platform is different, each offers numerous benefits due to tiny incisions and increased surgical precision.
Benefits of robotic surgery typically include:
- A shorter hospital stay
- A faster recovery
- Less postoperative pain
- Less scarring
Physical therapy and rehabilitation after surgery
Often, rehabilitation is an essential component of your recovery after surgery. If physical therapy and rehabilitation are needed, our therapists will begin working with you as soon as you are able. We also offer outpatient rehab services to support you in your recovery after you leave the hospital.
