Back and neck conditions

The spine is a very complex structure. It allows the body to move fluidly while providing vital support. A deformity, injury or disease can lead to debilitating pain that makes common activities extremely uncomfortable. Common back conditions include:

  • Bone spurs
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Herniated discs
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis and kyphosis
  • Spinal stenosis and myelopathy
  • Spinal tumors and cancer
  • Spine fractures
  • Spine infections
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Sports injuries

Non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments for back and neck pain

A personalized approach to care sets our spine doctors apart. We address how your pain and discomfort impacts your lifestyle. Prior to recommending surgery, we will typically first try to remedy your pain through physical therapy or other minimally invasive treatments, such as spinal injections.

Minimally invasive spine surgery

With minimally invasive spine surgery, many patients are able to go home soon after surgery, sometimes even the same day. If spine surgery is appropriate for your condition, we will do our best to provide you with this surgical approach. It can enable you to experience less pain, a shorter hospital stay and a faster recovery.

Minimally invasive procedures we offer include:

  • Artificial cervical disk spinal surgery
  • Decompression procedures for cervical, thoracic and lumbar stenosis
  • Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty
  • Microdiscectomy
  • Spinal fusion
  • Treatments for cervical, thoracic and lumbar herniated discs

At Parham and Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, we offer Spine education classes to help prepare you and your coach for surgery and your recovery at home. A coach can be a family member, friend or caregiver, anyone who will help you at home after surgery. The coach is invited to attend the class with you. The classes are provided by the spine program coordinator and also include instructions about therapy.

The spine program coordinator will work with you and your coach through your spine surgery to be sure you are progressing and to ensure satisfaction throughout the entire care experience.
