Our rehabilitation services
HCA Reston Hospital Center provides comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation services after surgery or debilitating injury. Our 30-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit has highly trained clinicians utilizing the latest evidence-based technologies and state-of-the-art equipment. All 30 beds are private rooms with a private bathroom, including walk-in shower, grab bars, and accessible sinks and toilets in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Our team of physicians, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, case managers, and nurses provides comprehensive care to help individuals achieve their highest level of functioning.
Our two rehabilitation gyms feature a variety of advanced equipment, which will be utilized with your therapy team in a one-on-one, therapeutic environment. Therapy sessions may also be completed within a patient’s room for added privacy.

- Comprehensive rehabilitative care: We offer physical, occupational and speech therapy services starting during your acute care stay and continuing through your inpatient rehab stay.
- Facilities dedicated to rehabilitative care: Our rehabilitation center features advanced, state-of-the-art equipment to promote a healthy, speedy recovery. This includes a variety of bodyweight support systems for assisted ambulation, neuromuscular electrical stimulation and functional electrical stimulation devices to maximize motor recovery, a fully functioning activities of daily living (ADL) suite to practice real-life daily tasks such as cooking, laundry, and home management, and additional technologies to address cognitive skills, endurance and balance training.

Physical therapy
Our rehabilitation facility provides comprehensive physical therapy (PT) services. Our physical therapists maximize healing and independence in people recovering from illness, injury, or neurological conditions. Your physical therapist will help you in the following areas:
- Customized treatment programs to address strength and endurance, range of motion and flexibility, functional mobility, balance and coordination with an overall emphasis on improving your mobility to enable you to independently and safely navigate your home and community environments
- Education and safety, including family and/or caregiver training throughout your rehab stay
- Recommending and fitting for wheelchairs, orthotics, and prosthetics as appropriate and in close collaboration with adaptive technology professionals (ATP’s) and certified prosthetists and orthotists (CPO’s).
Occupational therapy
Our occupational therapists help you maximize independence and safety to the highest level possible by practicing and adapting activities typically performed at home and work. Your OT will help you in the following areas:
- Customized treatment programs aimed at improving your ability to complete activities of daily living (dressing, bathing, eating, home management, self-care) including recommendations on necessary adaptations or use of adaptive equipment for increased ease and independence
- Strength and endurance, range of motion and flexibility, functional mobility. balance and coordination with an overall emphasis on maximizing your ability to care for yourself independently and re-integrate into the community
- Cognition (thinking skills), education, and safety to address attention, problem solving, processing, and prepare patients and caregivers for the transition to home.
Speech and language therapy
Speech and language therapy is often recommended after a traumatic or debilitating injury or illness that affects a person's ability to speak and/or swallow safely, such as a stroke. Additionally, speech and language therapy may be recommended to address cognition, memory, and safety strategies. Our speech therapists develop individualized programs to help improve your confidence and independence, as well as to address:
- Aphasia — Focusing on building reading, writing, speaking, comprehension, word finding and math skills.
- Cognition and memory — Developing strategies for patients to improve their attention, problem-solving and memory skills.
- Facial weakness — Emphasizing the movement and coordination of weakened facial muscles to improve the quality of speech.
- Swallowing — May include completion of a modified barium swallow study (MBS), also called video fluoroscopy, to analyze a patient’s swallowing biomechanics. Includes techniques such as swallowing exercises and patient education to identify appropriate diet textures, improve swallowing abilities, and reduce the risk of aspiration.
- Voice — Improving an individual’s vocal quality, reducing vocal cord abuse, managing nodules, optimizing breathing patterns and increasing speaking volume
Our therapists continuously utilize the latest evidence-based interventions, seek professional development through specialty certifications and continuing education, provide customized treatment plans to each patient to maximize their independence and safety with all aspects of mobility, and engage family/caregiver in ongoing education and training throughout each patient’s stay.
