Surgery remains a key component of cancer care and a common treatment for many patients. In addition to tumor removal, surgery may be recommended to keep a cancer from occurring.

We offer a wide range of surgical procedures for cancer treatment and diagnosis, including:
- Blue light cystoscopy for bladder cancer
- Endobronchial and endoscopic ultrasounds for tissue biopsies

- Minimally invasive robotic surgery for less scarring, less blood loss and a quicker recovery
- Sentinel node biopsy to determine the extent of cancer in adjacent lymph nodes
Support services we offer
We encourage patients to participate in cancer education and prevention. To do this, we engage with local neighborhoods offering services and participate in various community events, such as health fairs.
Our medical professionals also bring their expertise to your community group, support group, company, business or professional organization as speakers and presenters who provide cancer education for prevention.
To request a speaker, call Reston Hospital's Center's physician relations team at (703) 689-9566.
We understand that cancer care needs to go beyond treatment. That's why we offer cancer support services, including support groups, cancer counseling, educational programs, spiritual guidance and community outreach.
One of our cancer support groups include Step Sisters support services, a program that identifies patients who face challenges with transportation, childcare or other factors that may hinder treatment.
Hospice and palliative care
Palliative care aims to relieve the discomfort, symptoms and stress of serious illness and to improve quality of life for the patient and their caregivers. Hospice care is a type of specialized care that focuses on the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of terminally ill patients and their families.
Reston Hospital Center does not directly provide hospice or palliative care, but our team can connect you to local resources and help you navigate these services.
When lymph nodes are removed or damaged during cancer treatment, you may be at risk for lymphedema, which causes fluid retention or swelling in your arms, legs and other parts of the body. We provide a comprehensive lymphedema treatment program through the rehabilitation services of our Reston Therapy & Fitness Center.
To schedule an appointment for lymphedema therapy, please call (703) 689-9250.
Appointments are available Monday through Thursday from 6:30 am to 7:30 pm. You will need to provide your insurance information and a dated prescription from your doctor confirming your diagnosis.
Oncology nurse navigation
Our skilled cancer team includes oncology nurse navigators who help coordinate your cancer care. Our nurse navigators act as your liaison with our oncology specialists, provide education and support and guide you through your cancer journey—from diagnosis to survivorship.
