Our neurological services

We offer you access to experienced surgeons, specialists and the latest technologies to help you regain your health and recover critical skills.

Comprehensive neurological care

Your brain and nervous system work together to form the command center for your body. So when something is wrong, it's important to work with neurological specialists you can trust. Our team will get to know you personally, answer your questions and design an individualized care plan tailored to your unique situation.

We pair advanced technology — such as minimally invasive radiosurgery — with collaborative neurological professionals to quickly and accurately diagnose your condition. That way, you can begin treatment sooner, which improves your chances of making a full recovery.

We also provide advanced emergency care through our Primary Stroke Center, as recognized by The Joint Commission. We partner with emergency medical services personnel to begin treatment as soon as possible, and we continue care from your initial arrival in the emergency room (ER) through rehabilitation and recovery.

Multispecialty care team

Depending on your treatment plan, you may have a variety of highly trained medical professionals on your care team, including:

  • Emergency physicians
  • Intensive care clinicians
  • Neurologists and neurosurgeons
  • Physical, occupational and speech therapists
  • Radiation oncologists
  • Rehabilitation specialists
  • Surgical oncologists

In addition, our team includes more interventional neuroradiologists than most other healthcare providers in Southwest Virginia. Neuroradiologists are specialized physicians who know how to use the latest innovative tools to treat previously inoperable neurological conditions.

Neurological treatments

Our neurologists work with you to offer the most individualized care for your condition. Some of the treatments we offer include:

  • Electromyography
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS) treatments
  • Nerve conduction studies
  • Neuropathy
  • Sleep studies
  • Visual evoked potentials

Digital biplane angiography

We offer Southwest Virginia's only unit for digital biplane angiography, also known as three-dimensional rotational angiography (3DRA). This noninvasive, rapid-scanning process quickly captures highly detailed images inside the body, particularly the brain, spine and delicate systems.

Using the 3DRA system, several images are taken, often during surgical procedures, using a C-shaped device that rotates around you. Images are reconstructed in a 3D sequence, creating life-like projections of body tissues and processes.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)

An EEG is a painless, 90-minute neurological exam that uses sensors to evaluate electrical brain activity. An EEG helps doctors diagnose a variety of neurological disorders, from a common headache and dizziness to stroke and head trauma. It is also used to determine organic causes of psychiatric symptoms and disabilities in children.

Nervous system and brain imaging

By utilizing minimally invasive imaging technologies, you have a greater chance at a more positive outcome. These techniques ensure that more tumor cells can be removed in a single procedure, helping you spend less time in the hospital, with a quicker return to your daily life. The detailed nervous system and brain imaging imaging technologies available at our hospital lead to more accurate diagnoses and targeted treatments.

Rehabilitation services

Whether you are coping with the aftermath of a stroke, working to overcome functional limitations created by multiple sclerosis (MS) or recovering from an injury or surgery, our neurological rehabilitation team is here to restore your quality of life as quickly as possible.

Our neurological rehabilitation program partners with our physical therapy and rehabilitation team to bring you focused, personalized care. Together, we will stand by your side throughout your recovery process to help you regain your independence and mobility as quickly as possible.

Neuro and low-vision rehabilitation

Our neuro and low-vision rehabilitation program provides specialized care for vision problems stemming from neurological disorders, age-related changes, developmental issues or other medical conditions. It is the only therapy program of its kind in Southwest Virginia.
