Breast cancer screening

Regardless of family history, the two most common risk factors for breast cancer are being a woman and getting older. However, annual screening mammograms allow breast cancer to be detected early, when it is most treatable. Our team provides these screening mammograms as well as a full range of breast imaging and diagnostics for the early detection of breast cancer.

Breast imaging services we offer

At our breast health center, we offer:

  • 2D and 3D mammograms (tomosynthesis)
  • Breast ultrasound
  • Breast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), including abbreviated breast MRI (fast breast MRI)
  • Breast biopsy, including stereotactic, 3D-, ultrasound- and MRI-guided biopsies

We also provide 3D mammograms at Chesterfield Imaging Center.

Breast MRI

Breast MRIs are often used to detect breast cancers that have spread to surrounding tissue (invasive breast cancer). They are also typically used for patients who may need additional breast screening tools, such as women with dense breast tissue and a moderate risk of developing breast cancer. This type of test may detect cancers not visible on a mammogram, but it shouldn't replace annual mammograms.

Fast breast MRI

Fast breast MRI, sometimes called abbreviated breast MRI, is a shorter version of a traditional breast MRI. Fast breast MRIs are just as accurate as traditional breast MRIs

Some other benefits of a fast breast MRI include:

  • The scan can help find aggressive cancers that can grow quickly between annual mammograms.
  • The scan is radiation-free, painless and only lasts 10 minutes.
  • The results are sent to your referring physician within 48 hours.

Talk to your doctor to find out if you are a good candidate for fast breast MRI.

Same-day breast imaging results

About one in 10 women will be called back for additional testing after a screening mammogram. We understand that can be a stressful time, which is why we provide same-day breast imaging results for any follow-up tests. If you need another mammogram or an ultrasound, your doctor will review your results with you in detail that day and explain any next steps, if necessary.

Comprehensive breast cancer care

If your test results show a breast condition that needs treatment, our team will create a customized treatment plan based on your needs and diagnosis. If you're diagnosed with breast cancer, the Sarah Cannon Cancer Institute at Johnston-Willis Hospital will provide you with comprehensive breast cancer care.
