Seven HCA Virginia Health System hospitals were awarded top rankings – from No. 1 to No. 5 – from Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. Healthgrades also named Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals to its annual list of America's 100 Best Hospitals. These rankings reflect HCA Virginia Health System’s commitment to providing the best care possible and distinguish the hospitals as leading the state in specialty care.

In addition to being recognized nationally, Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals were the only hospitals in Virginia to earn the No. 1 spot for joint replacement and orthopedic surgery and Reston Hospital was the only hospital to receive the No. 1 spot for surgical care.

Additional rankings are below:

  • Chippenham & Johnston-Willis Hospitals
    • No. 2, surgical care
    • No. 3, critical care
  • Henrico, Parham, & Retreat Doctors’ Hospitals
    • No. 2, gastrointestinal surgery
    • No. 3, cardiac care
    • No. 3, orthopedic surgery
    • No. 3, surgical care
    • No. 4, gastrointestinal care
  • LewisGale Medical Center
    • No. 5, gastrointestinal surgery
  • Reston Hospital Center
    • No. 2, joint replacement
    • No. 2, orthopedic surgery

“Excellent patient outcomes are what matter most to us,” said Elizabeth Mikula, HCA Healthcare Capital Division vice president of quality. “These rankings reflect our commitment to providing high-quality specialty care throughout the state. We are proud of all of our HCA Virginia Health System hospitals that are setting the standard in surgical care, joint replacement, and more.”

Healthgrades evaluates hospitals solely on patient outcomes to determine the top-performing hospitals for specialty care in each of the 32 states assessed. Healthgrades’ 2024 analysis revealed that patients who seek care at a hospital with rankings in their condition or procedure have a better chance of a good outcome than if they were treated at a facility that is not among the top five in Virginia. This widening performance gap highlights the importance of selecting a top-rated program.
