Ranking puts hospitals in top five percent of all U.S. hospitals for clinical outcomes
Richmond, VA - HCA Virginia's hospitals have achieved the Healthgrades 2020 America's 250 Best Hospitals Award(tm).
The distinction places Chippenham & Johnston-Willis and Henrico, Parham and Retreat Doctors' Hospitals in the top 5 percent of nearly 4,500 hospitals assessed nationwide for superior clinical performance as measured by Healthgrades, the leading resource that connects consumers, physicians and health systems.
"These recognitions are a testament to our hospitals' commitment to patient safety," said Elizabeth Mikula, R.N., vice president of quality, HCA Capital Division. "I commend the teams for their outstanding achievement and dedication to providing the highest quality standards in patient care."
From 2016 through 2018, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Healthgrades America's 250 Best Hospitals Award had, on average, a 26.6 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award, as measured across 19 rated conditions and procedures for which mortality is the outcome.*
During that same period, if all hospitals performed similarly to those achieving the award, 161,930 lives could potentially have been saved. For example, patients treated for respiratory failure in hospitals achieving the Healthgrades America's 250 Best Hospitals Award have, on average, a 24.5 percent lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award.*
"It is apparent that the recipients of the Healthgrades America's 250 Best Hospital Award are dedicated to providing quality care for their patients," said Brad Bowman, M.D., chief medical officer, Healthgrades. "We congratulate the hospitals that received this award for their commitment to consistently providing top care and exceptional clinical outcomes for patients."

Henrico Doctors' Hospitals is a 767 licensed bed facility that consists of five community campuses, Henrico, Parham, and Retreat Doctors' Hospitals, West Creek Emergency Center and Hanover Emergency Center.
Recipients of the Healthgrades America's 250 Best Hospitals Award stand out among the rest for overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of care. During the 2019 study period (2015 through 2017), these hospitals showed superior performance in clinical outcomes for patients in the Medicare population across at least 21 of 32 most common inpatient conditions and procedures -- as measured by objective performance data (risk-adjusted mortality and in-hospital complications).
