HCA Virginia reaches milestone with 4,000th weight loss procedure

Richmond, VA — The team at Parham Doctors’ Hospital successfully conducted its 4,000^th bariatric procedure for weight loss. The HCA Virginia facility first launched its weight loss program in 2014 and completed 515 surgeries in 2022.

 “Reaching that number of cases is a testament to the ongoing quality and service that we’re providing to our community,” said Dr. Matthew Brengman, the surgeon who launched bariatrics at Parham Doctors’ Hospital. “It’s hugely gratifying to be able to have that level of impact. All of those patients have families and some of those [patients’] family members have gone on to get treatment for obesity. A lot of people now have a better quality of life.”

 More than 40% of Virginians suffer from obesity, Brengman said, and approximately 200,000 people have weight loss surgery in the United States each year. Parham Doctors’ Hospital offers several types of bariatric procedures that focus on making modifications to the digestive system with the goal of significant weight loss. HCA Virginia bariatric surgeons perform the following weight loss procedures: adjustable gastric band, duodenal switch, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, gastric bypass, intragastric balloon (gastric balloon), single anastomosis duodeno-ileostomy with sleeve gastrectomy, and vertical sleeve gastrectomy (gastric sleeve).

 Parham Doctors’ Hospital was named a Top 52 Hospital for Bariatric Surgery by Healthgrades in 2022. It is also a nationally accredited program by Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP). Additionally, according to market share data from the Virginia Department of Health, HCA Virginia performs 45.2% of the Richmond market’s total bariatric surgeries.
