Screening for Heart Attack

The purpose of screening is early diagnosis and treatment. Screening tests are administered to people without current symptoms, but who may be at high risk for certain diseases or conditions.

Screening is not done specifically for a heart attack, but your annual physical should provide an assessment of your heart attack risk. Assessment includes:

  • Blood pressure measurements
  • Blood tests to measure cholesterol and glucose levels
  • Body weight checks, such as checking your body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference
  • Questions about your lifestyle habits, such as eating, smoking, exercise, and alcohol use

If you are at high risk for having a heart attack, your doctor may want further evaluation on a more frequent basis.
