Richmond, VA, March 26, 2014 – Henrico Doctors’ Hospital announced today that it is the first hospital in Richmond to implant the Reveal LINQ Insertable Cardiac Monitor (ICM) System in a patient. This device is the smallest long-term, insertable cardiac monitoring device for patients with recurrent fainting, heart palpitations, unexplained stroke or atrial fibrillation. Cardiologist Robert E. Sperry, MD, FACC successfully completed the first implant in a patient last week.
The Revel LINQ ICM is approximately one-third the size of a AAA battery, making it more than 80 percent smaller than other ICMs. While significantly smaller, the device is part of a powerful system that allows physicians to continuously and wirelessly monitor a patient’s heart for up to three years. In addition to its continuous and wireless monitoring capabilities, the system provides remote monitoring and notifies physicians if patients have significant cardiac events between regular medical appointments.
“The Reveal LINQ ICM is so discreet that most patients will not even know it is there and can go about their lives without interruption or discomfort from the device,” said Dr. Robert Sperry. “Additionally, the device has the ability to communicate wirelessly with the patient’s physician via a home monitor, allowing critical updates to be transmitted to the physician, even when travelling away from home.”
Placed just beneath the skin through a small incision of less than 1 cm in the upper left side of the chest, the Reveal LINQ ICM is often nearly invisible to the naked eye once inserted. The device is placed using a minimally invasive insertion procedure, which simplifies the experience for both physicians and their patients. The system also includes a remote monitoring system with global cellular technology that transmits patients’ cardiac device diagnostic data to their clinicians from nearly any location in the world. Additionally, the Reveal LINQ ICM is MR-Conditional, allowing patients to undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) if needed.
By offering the Reveal LINQ ICM to patients, HCA Virginia’s Henrico Doctors’ Hospital is continuing to lead the way in cardiac care by using the latest technology to diagnose and treat heart disease.
