Henrico Doctors Hospital Clinical Nurse Specialist Honored in Field of Oncology Nursing

December 28, 2012

Richmond, Va. (Dec. 28, 2012) — Meg Helsley, M.S.N. R.N., AOCNS, oncology clinical nurse specialist, from the Cancer Center at Henrico Doctor’s Hospital, has been honored with the Roberta Scofield Memorial Certification Award from the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.

The award recognizes nurses who have demonstrated a dedication to oncology nursing and maintain a commitment to obtaining or renewing oncology nursing certification.

“I’m honored to have received the Roberta Scofield Memorial Certification Award, as it showcases the value of advanced oncology certification and my commitment to the patients I care for, many of whom are at high risk or have a cancer diagnosis,” said Helsley.

Coincidentally, Roberta Scofield was also an oncology clinical nurse specialist who died of cancer in the late 1980’s around the same time I completed my own cancer treatment for childhood lymphoma.  Though I did not know her personally as a nurse, my family and I learned the positive impact of having a certified pediatric oncology nurse on our own care team.”

Helsley entered the field of oncology nursing in 2000 and has been certified in oncology for eight years. In her role for the Cancer Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, she provides leadership to the Breast Oncology Program and High Risk Cancer Genetics Program to help improve outcomes for patients with cancer and their families by promoting clinical excellence and improving patients' quality of life.

The HCA Virginia Cancer Care Network cares for the majority of cancer patients in the surrounding area, with the largest breast cancer program around. For more information, call 804.422.2273.
