HCA Virginia Occupational Health Recognized by Richmond Fire Department for Work with Annual Physical Program

November 06, 2013

Richmond, Va. (Nov. 6, 2013) — HCA Virginia’s Occupational Health recently was recognized with a civilian citation by the Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services (RFES) for their efforts in developing and maintaining a successful annual physical program for Richmond firefighters.

Over the past five years, HCA Virginia Occupational Health in collaboration with the RFES, and Health Diagnostic Laboratory, Inc. developed and implemented a three-year program for firefighters systematically addressing pre-existing medical conditions, underlying medical conditions, and early risks for conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes, along with physical fitness attributes affecting health and safety.

“A key component of the program is to engage each firefighter and ensure a complete understanding of their health and wellness profile,” said Joe Andriano, M.D., medical director, HCA Virginia Occupational Health. “It is rewarding to be able to guide individuals through their journey, which in return allows them to accomplish their overall personal health goals.”

The program, which focuses on medical, fitness, rehabilitation and behavioral health, proactively changes a routine physical into an integrated evaluation by top medical staff, coupled with advanced biometric screenings.

“Today’s health and wellness environment calls on leaders capable of working in concert with others, able to collaborate in creative endeavors, innovate and inspire the first of its kind forward leaning patient centered program,” said Jeff Plum, director of Occupational Health Services, HCA Virginia. “We are honored to be a partner with the Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services and are dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of those who bravely serve our community.”

“Through our partnership with HCA Virginia, we have transformed the firefighters’ traditional annual physical over the past five years from routine evaluation with some screening into a proactive, integrated evaluation by top medical staff, coupled with advanced biometric screening and access to experts,” said Tracy Thomas, staff battalion chief, Richmond Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

With the help of the great team at HCA Virginia, in collaboration with HDL, our employees are fully prepared with the knowledge and tools necessary to take charge of their health. Consequently, they are better able to meet our mission, serve the community, and go home to their families with greater peace of mind than ever before.”
